German KFOR soldiers guard the Jarinje border crossing with Serbia in the north of Kosovo on September 16, 2011. Kosovo and EU police on September 16 were dispatched at two disputed border crossings with Serbia -- Jarinje and Brnjak in the north of Kosovo -- in a move that raised fears of a fresh wave of ethnic violence in a tense Balkan region. The action came two months after clashes that left one dead which erupted when Pristina dispatched special police to take over the posts to enforce a ban on imports from Serbia. The Serbian ban was imposed in protest at Kosovo's declaration of independence from Belgrade, which Belgrade, backed by Russia, has refused to recognise. NATO peacekeepers KFOR have since manned the posts.
